Surveyor 2

Surveyor 2 was the second probe by the U.S. space agency NASA as part of the Surveyor program. The Surveyor program was the successor of the Ranger program. The results of the program should prepare the manned lunar landing.

Mission

Surveyor 2 was launched on September 20, 1966 on an Atlas - Centaur rocket from the launch pad LC - 36 of the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. In contrast to the Ranger missions did not prepare a Park Orbit. That is, the probe took after separation, heading directly to the moon. A made ​​necessary course correction failed because one of the vernier engines did not ignite. The probe began to wobble and trials, they failed again to bring under control. Surveyor 2 crashed on 23 September on the moon in the sinus Medii.
