Surxondaryo Province

The Surxondaryo Province ( Uzbek: Surxondaryo Viloyati, Cyrillic Сурхондарё вилояти; Russian Сурхандарьинская область / Surchandarinskaja oblast ) is a Viloyat ( province ) in the south of Uzbekistan. It borders with Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and the province Qashqadaryo. The area is 20,800 km ², with a population of 2,022,548 inhabitants, of whom about 80 % live in rural areas.

Is not clearly established whether the province is inhabited mostly by Uzbeks or Tajiks.

Management

The Surxondaryo province is divided into 14 administrative districts and the cities of Denov and Termez. Capital is Termez with 139 299 inhabitants. Other major cities are for example Jarqorgon, Sherobod, Boysun and Shorchi.

Climate

The climate is characterized quite continental, with mild, moist winters and hot, dry summer months.

Economy

Mineral resources are oil, natural gas and coal. Other industries, such as food processing and production of building materials are other important sources of income in the otherwise very rural region. Agriculture is practiced in the form of cotton plantations, sericulture, plant breeding and viticulture. Surxondaryo is the largest supplier of dünnfaseriger cotton in Uzbekistan. The partially dominant subtropical climate allows the cultivation of sugar cane.

The infrastructure in this region is well developed. Over 300 km of railway and 2,000 km of paved roads allow addition, a trade on the Uzbek border. The only port in Central Asia, which is situated on a river, is located in Termez on the Amu Darya.
