Susanna Clarke

Susanna Clarke ( born 1 November 1959 in Nottingham ) is a British writer. Notoriety she gained with her fantastic novel Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell.

Life

Clarke was born in Nottingham in 1959 as the eldest daughter of a pastor of the Methodist church. During her childhood she moved often and lived in various cities in northern England and Scotland.

She later studied at St. Hilda 's College, Oxford. After their successful graduation, she worked for some time in various non-fiction publishers. In 1990 she spent a year as an English teacher at Fiat in Turin. In 1991, she went as a lecturer in English to Bilbao ( Spain).

1992 Clarke returned back to the UK and took over between 1993 and 2003, the institute of division cookbooks of the publisher Simon & Schuster in Cambridge. Before her novel she has already published some short stories. She currently lives with her partner, the writer Colin Greenland in Cambridge.
