Susegana

Susegana is a Northeast Italian municipality ( comune ) with 11,863 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the province of Treviso in Veneto. The community is located about 20.5 kilometers north of Treviso, about 45 kilometers north- west of Venice on the river Crevada, a tributary of the Monticano

History

A prehistoric settlement that dates back to the Bronze Age is detectable on the basis of archaeological finds. In the Roman era, the Via Claudia Augusta crossed the present-day municipality. Even today, the bridge of Susegana over the Piave is obtained. On the hills forts were built. The still preserved Castello di San Salvatore dates from 1323 and later, and was built by the lords of Treviso. After this, the municipality of San Salvador was established during the French occupation. Later renamed Susegana was.

During the First World War, including San Giorgio church, the center of the town was destroyed. The Church of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin contains an altarpiece by Giovanni Antonio da Pordenone and 1984 during restoration work discovered frescoes from the 15th century.

Traffic

Susegana is 13 Pontebbana on the Strada Statale. A train station is served by trains on the railway line from Venice to Udine. The former railway line from Montebelluna after Susegana (opening 1916) is set in 1966.
