Sutjeska National Park

The National Park Sutjeska ( serbokroat. nacionalni park Sutjeska ) is the oldest national park in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Republika Srpska is located in a federal part. It extends in the catchment area of the Sutjeska, a tributary of the Drina river, in an area of 175 km ². The National Park is located about 25 km south of Foca and 70 km south-east of Sarajevo at the Montenegrin border.

On the eastern edge of the park is the 2,386 m high Maglić the highest peak of the country. The park is also one of the last primeval forests of the Warm Temperate Zone of Europe, the Perućica jungle. In the rugged mountains, there are more than 50 m tall trees, among them the black pine and beech. Other attractions are about 75 m high waterfall Skakavac of the river and the canyon of the Sutjeska Perućica, the 2000 m high mountain ranges in the west and Zelengora Maglić and Volujak separates the east from each other here. Just south of the park rises the Neretva, the most important river of Herzegovina.

For those based in the National Park Sutjeska species include Brown Bear and Wolf, who have here an extensive retreat.

During the Second World War the area of the park was the site of the Battle of the Sutjeska between the Yugoslav Partisans and the Wehrmacht, the today remember several monuments in the national park. The battle was the fifth offensive in the movie - theme boiler Battle of the Sutjeska (1972).

Settlements and infrastructure

The Park is located entirely in the area of ​​Foca municipality. The largest town in the protected area is Tjentište, more settlements are most Popov and Suba. A total of about 2500 people live in the national park.

The main road 20 (Dubrovnik- Foca, Visegrad ) crosses the National Park Sutjeska canyon.
