Suure-Jaani

Suure -Jaani ( dt: . Bulk -St Johannis ) is a town in the municipality Suure -Jaani in the north -east of Estonia Viljandi County.

History

The oldest finds in the territory of Suure -Jaani can be dated to the 6th millennium BC.

The crucial and tragic battle of ancient Estonians for freedom took place in the community Suure -Jaani on St. Matthew's Day (September 21 ) in 1217 instead.

The modern city developed around the church of St. John the Apostle, which was built in the mid 14th century. This place was originally called Valula (or " Valle "). First mentioned in 1423 (?).

The present name Suure -Jaani, used since the 17th century, the Estonian equivalent of the German name of the Church. Still, services are held in the church.

The town was an important cultural center in Estonia during the period of national awakening in the 19th century. Frantic construction activities began in the last decade of the 19th century.

On May 1, 1938 Suure -Jaani received its town charter. Since 2005, the city is part of the municipality Suure -Jaani.

Culture and sights

Structures

At the end of the 12th century, about two kilometers (now known as Lõhavere ) the fortress Lehola built north- east of the city at one point. The fort was the center of the historical Estonian region Sakala and the center of the struggle of the Estonians against the German Livonian Order, in the 13th century. Much more than a hill is not left of the fortress, but is still a tourist attraction ( this point is in Estonia Linnamägi known as Lembitu ).

Sons and daughters of the town

Famous son of the town is the composer Artur Kapp ( 1858-1952 ). In his memory, the summer festival takes place since 1998 in Suure -Jaani, under the artistic direction of composer and organist Andres Uibo (* 1956 ) is available.
