History

Early years and rise in the B- League

The football came about students for the first time in 1912 by Matt Castle, the games fought out here in their free time. The crucial starting point to start their own club gave the Sieber family, who moved from Vienna to Mattersburg 1919. Their sons played in Vienna already in clubs football, particularly mentioning is Matthias Sieber, who had accrued as a defender for the SpC Rudolfshügel in the Austrian league. Thus, the sports association Matter castle was launched on 10 June 1922, the club colors were defined with green and white. Already in the autumn started the club together with ASV Neufeld and SC Sauerbrunn in the Burgenland state championship. The club had at that time still no chance of the title, but soon rose to the strongest clubs in Burgenland. Against the ASV Neufeld, however, had always lose out, also because of various reasons during the Neufeld - dominated Burgenland Football Association repeatedly points deductions were arranged. So it was on 15 March 1929 exit from the Burgenland Association and subsequently on July 31, 1929 entry in the Lower Austrian Association.

In Lower Austria the SV Mattersburg had a significantly stronger competition, so the club, apart from two one-year performances in the national league, in the second class played. During the Second World War had to 1941-1945 the matches are set, thereafter it came to the reactivation of the club in the new Burgenland Association. In 1949 the SV Matter castle in the new national league, from the team in 1953 was victorious emerge as national champions for the first time. The reward for this was the rise in the second class B league in which the match of association 1953/54, but could not say. Thus the Green-Whites play again in the national league, which was won again in 1956. Add the following new relegation to the B- League the castle countries had against Upper Austria Linz SV nitrogen but no chance ( 0:5, 4:3 ). In 1957 she won After re winning the division in the relegation against the ATSV Ranshofen with 3:1 and 4:3, in the B- League in 1957/58, however, the league was missed again.

Missed jump into the makings crash and return

The SV Matter castle remained some years in the national league, before 1963 brought the ticket for the new subprime Regional League East to date, the fourth national title. For the first time in club history managed to avoid relegation in the second stage game. Thanks to a clever reinforcements the " football miracle Matter castle " was soon all the rage, because the club led to the penultimate round 1964/65 the table, so he had the great opportunity to ever ascend the first Burgenland club in the first-class National League. A home win against ASV victory village on the final day seemed likely, especially after the SV Mattersburg 1-0 took the lead and a penalty was awarded. Lebersorger, who ironically played the following season at the 1st Simmering SC, and missed victory village were going to compensate. This precisely Simmering came at the last moment to enjoy the climb, in Matter castle resignation was spreading. After the Club 1965/66 even stuck in a relegation battle, was 1966/67, again obtained with the fourth place a good result. Since the same year the SC Eisenstadt promotion to the National League, there were plans, the two leading clubs in the country, which were still to not far located from each other, to unite to the " FC Burgenland ", but that did not work.

Due to the ups and downs of recent years gnawed SV Mattersburg however, to embarrassed financial problems, which led in the national league 1967/68 on the voluntary descent from the Regional League and have now been partially offset by the sale of numerous players. In the national league this days developed a strong rivalry with the directly adjacent SV Rohrbach, so put about Rohrbach Fanatic 1968, the benches in Mattersburger Pappelstadion on fire. Ever since the descent 1987 in Burgenland's second league mid threatened the once leading club in the country of the crash into insignificance. After taking office of chairman Martin Pucher, there was a new upsurge, youth work was intensified also. 1990 SV Mattersburg returned to the national league, where she quickly established herself in the front half of the table. With the former Hungarian World Cup participants Péter Hannich also succeeded in 1994, the rise in the East Regional. The Hungarian it was he who scored the decisive 1-0 victory over arch-rivals Rohrbach before 6,500 spectators for the SV Mattersburg.

Bundesliga and first UEFA Cup participation

In the Regional League East, which now represented the third power level in Austria, the Burgenland played from the beginning with the front. After a second place in 1994/95 could be fixed in the second class 1st Division 1999/2000 with only two losses ultimately the rise. The last hurdle Relegation was mastered this with 1:1 and 5:0 against FC Lustenau 07. After the team could be amplified by the returnees and former Austrian World Cup participants Dietmar Kühbauer, which comes from the Mattersburger Youth, 2002/ 03 achieved the superior winning the second game level with 13 points ahead of the DSV Leoben and thus the rise in the Bundesliga. In 2003 also the first ascent party succeeded in gaining the OFB Cup semi-final. Noteworthy in this and the following seasons was the huge number of spectators. In the second division in 2002/ 03, the SV Mattersburg an average of 9,800 spectators had. Even in the Bundesliga had no club nearly as many viewers. The second place was taken by the SV Austria Salzburg a 6,700 fans. In the first division of the cut could be even increased to 11,100 visitors.

The SV Mattersburg might call himself away in the first seasons of relatively relegation battle, long time, however, the club was extremely weak away team. A defeat away series with Werner Gregoritsch and Muhsin Ertugral cost two coaches the job. The Franz used as interim coach in November 2004 Lederer secured with five competitive wins in series and the first away win since October 2003, ie more than one year, the Fixtrainerposten. The 2004/05 season they finished in fifth place. This represented the best placement for the time being that ever reached a Burgenland football club in the top flight. By a 3-2 victory in the OFB Cup semi-final in 2006 against the Traun ASKOE the SV Matter castle was finally the first Burgenland team in the finals of the OFB Cup. The team, however, had the final against favorites FK Austria Wien do little and lost 0:3. Yet thus waved the first participation in the qualification for the UEFA Cup. But the home game did not take place in the domestic Pappelstadion, but at Vienna's Ernst -Happel-Stadion, the home stadium because only 3,000 fans would have been admitted. The Mattersburger failed at its premiere at the European stage at Wisła Kraków (1:1 and 0:1).

Establishment and relegation to the second division

The run of success could be continued in 2006 /07, the club presented with Cem Atan, Michael Mörz, Christian Fuchs and Juergen Patocka now four national player and was able to increase prominently with Carsten Jancker. The SV Mattersburg was during the season for a long time in second place behind FC Red Bull Salzburg. Also the cup final in Vienna could be reached again by a surprising 3-2 away victory at the Red Bulls. Meanwhile, against the same opponent as in 2006 FK Austria Wien even favorite position, the castle countries but awarded a 1-0 half-time lead and were subject to 1:2. Finally finished the Sports Association Mattersburg the Bundesliga on the 3rd Place - the best ever placing a Burgenland football team that could be taken but only with a 6-1 against FC Wacker Tirol in the final championship round.

In the 2007/ 08 season, the SV Mattersburg started well again and was briefly the leader of the Bundesliga and finally finished a good fifth place. In the UEFA Cup qualification they met in the first round the team of FK Aktobe from Kazakhstan and one at home after a 0-1 defeat in Aktobe - the first time in Pappelstadion - defeated 4-2. In the second round the Mattersburger failed, however, clear at FC Basel, with a total score of 2:6. In the following season 2008/ 09, the SV had to fight against relegation until the final day. As Table Ninth but also succeeded in this season of League receipt. Much better it ran in the 2009/10 season, in the Matter castle never fell in danger of relegation, finishing in sixth place in the final table. In the season 2010/11 we had to settle for ninth place in the table. In real danger of relegation Burgenlanders not came because they were twelve points clear of bottom club and relegation LASK Linz at the end of the season.

Not much better was the 2011/12 season, but could be held at the end of relegated Kapfenberg SV with a lead of 15 points clear at a distance.

In the 2012/13 season, the SV fell on the final day of the seventh back to the tenth and last place after the game against direct relegation rivals FC Admira Wacker Mödling was lost 0:1 and the two also relegation-threatened clubs FC Wacker Innsbruck and SC Wiener Neustadt won their last games. The four teams were at the end of the season separated by just one point. The points with the same SV Mattersburg Admira could thus be secured by the better goal ninth place and to remain in the Bundesliga. The tenth place meant after ten years in the Bundesliga relegation to the First League. After the team was there, even though personnel hardly changed only on a mid-table, the new coach Alfred Tatar was suspended on October 7, 2013.
