Sven Bergqvist

Sven Olof Lennart Bergqvist ( born August 20, 1914 in Stockholm; † 16 December 1996 Hässelby ) was a Swedish athlete. He was football and Bandytorhüter, ice hockey defender and handball player. After an accident, he took part in competitions in archery as a disabled athlete.

Career

Bergqvist played from 1932 for Hammarby IF in both the football, the bandy and ice hockey team. Until 1946, he was active for the club. He also played for Hellas SoIK handball. In addition, he was appointed in both the Swedish national football team and the national hockey team. In 1936 he took part in both the Winter Olympic Games, as well as the Summer Olympics. In the Summer Games, he took up only in football, although the field handball team had asked him for his participation.

Bergqvist debuted for the national football team on June 30, 1935 in a 3-1 victory over Germany. Until 1943, he played a total of 35 matches. He participated in the Soccer World Cup 1938 participating as third-choice goalkeeper, but did not play. In the National Hockey Bergqvist played 55 times, including 30 official international games.

After a serious accident Bergqvist was in a wheelchair. He qualified for the 1960 Summer Paralympics in archery. For financial reasons, he could not attend because he had the travel costs themselves have to bear.

He was inducted into the IIHF Hall of Fame in 1999.
