Sverdlovsk, Ukraine

Sverdlovsk (Ukrainian Свердловськ; Russian Свердловск / Sverdlovsk ) is a city of regional importance in eastern Ukraine. It is the administrative center of Sverdlovsk Rajon, but itself is not part of this Rajons and with 65 269 inhabitants ( 2013) is the seventh largest city in the Luhansk Oblast.

The city is located in the eastern Donets Basin approximately 80 km south of Oblasthauptstadt Luhansk.

History

The town was founded in 1938 by the merger of several villages and is named after the Soviet Russian politician and statesman Yakov Sverdlov ( 1885-1919 ) named. In Sverdlovsk there was the prisoner of war camp for German prisoners of war number 470.

On 28 May 2009 a bill was in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine presented, in which it was planned to rename the city of Sverdlovsk in Dolschansk ( Должанск ). So far, however, nothing in this respect is further happened.

Rajon

Sverdlovsk is the administrative center of the homonymous Rajons, but is not itself a part of him. The Rajon Sverdlovsk (Ukrainian Свердловський район ) located south of the Luhansk Oblast and is bordered to the east and south for a distance of 84 km to the Russian Rostov Oblast. It has 12,073 inhabitants ( November 2012 ) and an area of ​​1131.9 km ². The population density is 11 inhabitants per km ².
