Sveti Martin na Muri

Sveti Martin na Muri (in German Sankt Martin an der Mur ) is a Croatian village and municipality in the county Međimurje.

Geography

The municipality is located in a hilly area between vineyards in the far north of the county Međimurje on the right bank of the Mur River and bordering Slovenia. It spreads over an area of ​​25.24 km ² from (approximately 3.46 % of the entire county ) and one of a series of medium-sized communities.

Between the villages Grkavescak and Jurovčak a thermal spring was before the First World War in deep wells for oil and found ( in German: Wutschkowetz ) VUČKOVEC called.

The population

At the last census in 2011, the community had Sveti Martin na Muri 2,605 inhabitants, of whom 435 live in the same village, which is the largest in the community.

The population density in the community is about 103 inhabitants per square kilometer.

History

Sveti Martin na Muri is one of the oldest towns and communities Međimurjes. Here is an important archeological site from Roman times. At the point at which a Roman road from the direction of Ptuj ( Poetovio ) to Lendava ( Unterlimbach ) the river Mur crossed, the Romans founded a municipium called Halicanum. A locality with rare Roman coins and other remains of the ancient culture was discovered here and partially investigated.

In the Middle Ages the area was important because of its location. The parish of St. Martin was first mentioned in 1334. Some Gothic and Baroque churches were built in that time or a little later, as well as castles and manor houses ( Gradiščak, Lapšina ). The locks Gradiščak and Lapšina belonged in the 16th and 17th centuries, members of the noble family Mlakovečki (Hungarian Malakóczi ).

Economy

The community has always been one of the most economically less developed areas of the county Međimurje. The inhabitants have mostly lived by farming, viticulture and animal husbandry.

In recent years, however, industry and tourism, developing more and more, so that there are 54 active businessman, with 537 employees, and 37 artisans today. In Vrhovljan, in close proximity to the seat of the municipality of Sveti Martin na Muri, there is a functioning economic zone on an area of ​​around 14 ha A few kilometers south has today at the hot springs and the old baths VUČKOVEC the modern thermal spa complex " Toplice Sveti Martin " developed.
