Svetly, Sakha Republic

Svetly (Russian Светлый, Yakut Сибиэтлэй ) is an urban-type settlement in the Republic of Sakha ( Yakutia) with 3137 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010 ).

Geography

The settlement lies on the southern edge of the Central Siberian mountains belonging Wiljuiplateaus, about 850 miles as the crow flies west of the capital Yakutsk Republic, near the right bank of the Lena Creek Wiljui. A little below the village opens from the right tributary Otschtschugui - Botuobuja one.

Svetly belongs to Rajon Mirny, whose administrative center Mirny, it is a good 60 km in a north-westerly direction away.

History

The settlement originated in the late 1970s in connection with the construction of an additional dam and hydroelectric power plant on Wiljui below the large Wiljui Reservoir. In 1984 the status of an urban-type settlement was awarded. The place name is in Russian for light; the Yakut name Sibietlej is one of the Yakut phonology adapted form of the Russian word.

The power plant was taken after a long delay in construction due to the economic crisis in the period of the collapse of the Soviet Union at the end of the 1980s and in the 1990s, only between 2004 and 2008 with three of the previously planned four turbines in operation.

Economy and infrastructure
