Svilengrad

Svilengrad [ ˌ svilɛŋ ɡrat ] ( Bulgarian Свиленград to 1913 Mustafa Pasha / Мустафа Паша Turkish Mustafapaşa ) is a Bulgarian town in Thrace at the Maritsa River, at the foothills of the Rhodope mountains.

The city is located about 2 km from the Greek and about 14 km from the Turkish border.

History

In this area of the Rhodope mountains, the origin of the Thracian fertility cult ( Orphic cult ) to be located. Riverside Mariza there should have been a mythical battle of Hera (the embodiment of the Rhodope mountains ) and Zeus (the embodiment of the Balkan Mountains ).

Even after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire remained here many Pomaks who were expelled in 1971 because of disputes in Turkish Thrace, Eastern Thrace.

Svilengrad has 18,700 inhabitants ( December 2005). Svilengrad since 2000 has been sister city of the German patch Weferlingen (now city Oebisfelde - Weferlingen ). The Mayor called Georgi Manolov.
