Svoboda nad Úpou

Svoboda nad Úpou ( German: freedom ) is a town in the valley of the Upa. It is located between the Giant Mountains and the Rehorngebirge.

History

The previously uninhabited area was from 1560 populated by recruited Tyrolean woodcutters. The settlement at the entrance of the inhospitable Aupatales received the name of "freedom" and not unjustly: from here you could chop wood, make land arable and take possession and was no master a subject, except of course the Emperor directly for the military service. Initially the site was dominated by agriculture, in the 19th century founded Prosper Joseph Mary Piette a paper factory. Since 1871 Svoboda nad Úpou terminus of the railway line Trutnov - Svoboda nad Úpou. 1939 lived in the town of 1,271 inhabitants.

Three miles west is the Janské Lázně.
