Svratka (river)

The confluence of the Svratka ( left) and the Svitava

The Svratka, formerly Švarcava ( German Schwarza, Schwarzach, also Svratka ) is a left tributary of the Thaya.

Course

It rises north-east of studánka Cikháj in Moravia on Žákova hora Hills in the Zdarske in Stříbrná. The second source arises from the forester's house Blatky, this inflow is also called Břimovka. Between the mountain Otrok in Herálec and the mouth of the creek below Trhonický Jimramov the course of Svratka formed the historic border between Bohemia and Moravia. It flows through the city, where 1936-1940 the Brno reservoir ( Brnenska prehrada ) was born. In the Thaya it opens at Ivaň in the dam Nové Mlýny ( Neumühl ).

The largest tributaries are at Ivaň the Jihlava Svitava (German Zwitta ), which opens at Přízřenice on the southern outskirts of Brno.

The name probably comes from the old Bohemian word sworti ( " wind "). In the recent past he was also named Svratka / Švarcava. Many residents (especially in the Brno area) Svratka is still known Piava. Thus, in many Moravian soldiers in the service of the imperial of participants and victims of the Piaveschlacht ( northern Italy ) is thought in the First World War, Army have fallen.
