Swabian-Hall Swine

The Swabian- Hall swine, also Swabian- Hall Pig (SH ) or colloquially known Hällisch - Franconian country pork or Mohrenköpfle, is an old domestic pig breed with distribution area in northeastern Baden -Württemberg, in particular in the eponymous district of Schwäbisch Hall.

Features

The boars of the breed are about 90 cm high ( withers) and 275-350 kg, sows about 80 cm high and 222-275 kg. Head, neck and hind legs of the animals are black, front legs and body are not pigmented. From its color is due also the widespread colloquial term " Mohrenköpfle ".

History

The Württemberg King Wilhelm I led in 1820 to promote agriculture Chinese pig mask one, created the Swabian- Hällischen pigs by their crossing with native breeds. The other European saddle pig breeds originated in the same way. Colored marks are the black head and black rump. The distinction is made by a edging strip, where white hair growing on black pigmented skin.

The first Breeders Association was founded in 1925. Thanks to their high meat quality and very good mothering abilities almost exclusively Swabian-Hall pigs were kept still in the 1940s in the district of Schwäbisch Hall. In later years they were displaced from other breeds, the meat of the now awakened to consumer demands for lean meat corresponded more closely. 1987 declared the Society for the Conservation of Old and Endangered Livestock Breeds (GEH ) the Schwäbisch - Hall swine for 'at-risk livestock breed of the Year ".

In 2007, the Swabian- Hall swine has been held in more than 1000 companies. Together They are closed in the Peasant Farmer Group Schwäbisch Hall, in Baden -Württemberg Schweinezuchtverband. Reared and fattened the animals alone with non-genetically modified food from the region and without mast excipients. Meat produced with these animals in the meat quality program of Peasant Farmer Group Schwäbisch Hall is a protected designation of origin PGI Europe.
