Swain County, North Carolina

Swain County is a county located in the state of North Carolina of the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Bryson City, which was named after Captain Thaddeus Bryson.

Geography

The County is located almost in the extreme western North Carolina, bounded on the north by Tennessee, is located in the south about 35 km from Georgia and has an area of 1400 square kilometers, of which 32 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Haywood County, Jackson County, Macon County and Graham County.

Swain County is divided into three townships: Charleston, Forney Creek and the Nantahala.

History

Swain County was formed in 1871 from parts of Jackson County. It was named for David L. Swain, the governor of North Carolina during the period 1832 to 1835 and subsequent President of the University of North Carolina for 33 years.
