Swami Nikhilananda

Swami Nikhilananda (actually Dinesh Chandra Das Gupta, * 1895 in Bengal, British India, † 1973 in New York City, USA) was a Bengali Hindu scholar, translator and author.

Life

Swami Nikhilananda was already familiar in his youth by his devout parents with the teachings of Ramakrishna and Swami Vivekananda. At the University of Calcutta, he was trained as a journalist. At the same time he came into contact with the Indian freedom movement. However, his life took a different direction for his study of Hinduism, in the Sri Sarada Devi him, the Holy Mother introduced. After several years as a member of the Ramakrishna Order, which he spent with the study of the Holy Scriptures and the writings of important representative of Hinduism, he was seconded in 1931 as one of the representatives of the Order in the United States. In 1933 he founded in New York City, the Ramakrishna - Vivekananda Center, which he headed until his death in 1973.

In the aftermath Nikhilananda was invited to the USA to give lectures and discussions about the relationship of religion. He contributed to the spread of the literature of the Ramakrishna movement through translations from Sanskrit and Bengali into English and was at the center of attraction for people like Margaret Woodrow Wilson, daughter of former U.S. President Woodrow Wilson, the representative of comparative theology of Joseph Campbell, the engineer and inventor Chester Carlson and the philosopher Lex Hixon, who was his student.
