Swami

Swami or Svami (Sanskrit, m., स्वामिन, svāmin, Master ) is a Hindu religious title, which simplifies means "lord" and is usually added to the prestigious men.

Swami is prepended to the name. The title indicates that someone is considered in a religious or spiritual realm as taught and ' highly respected ' is. Many yogis and gurus bore this title, such as Vivekananda, Sivananda, Sri Yukteswar and Paramahamsa Yogananda.

Etymologically, the term is not set to the religious sphere: it derives from sva ( distinct). The importance range includes the Sanskrit possessor, owner, master, lord, chief, commander ( of an army ), husband, lover, king, prince, spiritual teacher.

In Hindi, there are the meaning " head of a religious order, title for the Supreme Being ( Vishnu or Shiva), title for a famous wise or admirer " added.

In Germany the title through the practice of Osho ( Bhagwan ) was known to his male followers were always addressed as " Swami ".
