Antechinus minimus

Antechinus minimus is a Beutelsäugerart from the kind of Breitfußbeutelmäuse ( Antechinus ).

Distribution and habitat

These bags mouse lives and the alpine areas of Victoria and the extreme south of South Australia near Mount Gambier on the southeast coast of Australia, in the southern Central Highlands. Furthermore, the species occurs in Tasmania and on the Bass Strait Islands King and Flinders Iceland Iceland.

Habitat of the species are open forests, not eviscerated, moist and dense heath and swampy grasslands with eagle ferns and sour grass plants.

Way of life

Antechinus minimus is nocturnal and partly crepuscular, but also diurnal. The gestation period is Tasmania from May to July. After 28 to 32 days gestation period 6 to 8 young are born between July and August. On the mainland, the propagation takes place about a month earlier, the reason is not known. The females survive another year, but the males die like all other types of Breitfuß Bag mice after the end of the mating season. The main food of this species consists of insects.

Threat

Antechinus minimus is listed by the IUCN as uncritical ( least concern ).

System

This species was described in 1803 as the first representative of the genus Antechinus by Étienne Geoffroy Saint- Hilaire. He arranged them to the genus of quoll, which is why she received the epithet minimus (Latin is the smallest ).

There are two recognized subspecies:

  • A. m. minimus inhabited Tasmania and the islands of Bass Strait.
  • A. m. maritimus lives on the Australian mainland.
