Swansea is a city in St. Clair County in the western part of the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2000 Swansea had 10,579 inhabitants.

The city is part of the Metro - East region called that includes the eastern part of Illinois lying in the metropolitan area of St. Louis in Missouri.

Geography

Swansea is located at 38 ° 32'30 " north latitude and 89 ° 59'14 " west longitude. The city covers 13.2 square kilometers, spread over 13.1 km ² land and 0.1 km ² water surface.

Swansea is located 1.7 km from the center of Belleville in the immediate vicinity of the main city of St. Clair County.

Swansea is located 22.5 km east of the Mississippi River, which forms the border with Missouri.

History

At the end of the 19th century, the area now Swansea farmland and industry was characterized. The residents were always intent on independence, so they opposed efforts to extend the city Belleville to the northwest. Thus was founded in December 1886, the independent community as New Swansea and nationally recognized.
