History

The Swedish national basketball team first participated in the finals of the European Basketball Championship in 1953, in which they all but lost seven games and finished last. Two years later, defeated in his own first encounter Denmark. This remained the only victory in the tournament, but that was enough before the West German national team for the third-last and 16th Place. In a limited to 16 teams of participants was not represented in the following two sweeps and then reached for the first time at the European Championships 1961 final, where they defeated in Belgrade in the placement round England and finished 18th and last place. Four years later, though it was enough to qualify for a field of 16 teams, but in the final in 1965 in the Soviet Union they finished winless the last place. Another four years later, was represented at the finals in 1969 in a field of twelve teams. To kick it surprisingly defeated Bulgaria, but lost all remaining games and finished again the last place in the final.

In the 1970s, the Swedish selection was represented at a European Championship finals none. After the Olympic boycott of most NATO countries for the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow they slipped in the field of participants of the Olympic basketball competition. In the only participation in a global finals, although they remained in the first round again without a win, but in the placement round get two more victories over Senegal and India. The final victory against Poland was without significance for the classification and so ended the tournament in Sweden the tenth and third last place. In the European Championship finals in France in 1983 it remained under twelve participants complete without a win and once again took the last place. After the late 1980s, only eight teams participated in the final competition were invited back the 16 teams at the European Championship finals in Germany in 1993. For this field of participants to the Swedish selection could qualify and defeated in the second group match later Vice European Champion Russia. Due to the poorer direct comparison, however, we failed to make it into the second round and was classified at the end of the 14th and third last place. Two years later, the number of participants was reduced at the European Championship finals in 1995 to 14 teams. It remained winless in six group matches and finished last. But even before a home crowd they remained winless in the preliminary round and let the class for 16 participants hospitable to all the other teams go first.
