Swiss Challenge League

The Brack.ch Challenge League is the second highest division in Swiss football. Since the 2013/14 season Brack.ch serves as the new title sponsor after first held in 2009 Dosenbach for a season this function.

Number of teams

At the beginning of the Challenge League in season 2003/ 04 played 17 teams in the league. In subsequent years, the league has been expanded to 18 teams. In the 2008 /09 season we reduced the number of teams to 16, to make the league more attractive.

Reform of the League for the 2012/13 season

The Swiss Football Association or the Department of the Swiss Football League decided to reform the Challenge League, which was confirmed on 21 May 2011 on November 12, 2010.

For the season 2012/13 towards the number of teams was reduced from 16 to 10, the losers play from now in a new, far discharged Switzerland, third division, which bears the name first league promotion.

Importance of the League

In order to give the Challenge League a higher profile in Swiss football, a package of measures was created in three areas in the 2007/ 08 season. This includes the technical operation, communication and marketing of the league. So football games were, among others, for the first time in the history of the second-highest Swiss league, televised live ( Swiss sports television) and the Internet. This was continued in the 2008 /09 season. 2008, a major sponsor analogous to the Super League was found, however, who got out after only one season. From the 2013/14 season the club the Challenge League may use four foreigners at the same time in their first team höhchstens. Game Mode

The new name also a revolutionary mode was introduced in 2003, after which two teams fought out a return match each within a week and the results as in the UEFA Cup were added together. The winner of this direct encounter got two additional points credited. After just one season, this innovation was, however, abolished.

In the Challenge League play currently ( season 2013/14 ) of 10 teams against each other. After the season, the first place winner of the last table rises in the Axpo Super League, in the first league doctorate. The Challenge League will be played in league system and a double round. Each club meets four times for each opponent, two times on home soil, two times away from home. Overall, each club thus completed 36 games per season.
