Swiss federal election, 1995

The Swiss Parliament elections of 1995 were held on 22 October 1995. The 200 seats of the National Council as well as 39 of the 46 seats in the Senate were to be reassigned. This 45th legislative period lasted four years until October 1999.

In Parliament there was exceptionally high profits for the Social Democrats. The SP won 15 seats and made by the losses of the 1980s betting. The Swiss People's Party grew by four seats.

The social democratic gains went mainly at the expense of the Greens, which lost six of Representatives seats.

In the Senate, there were no major changes, the SP increases by 2 seats to ( from 3 to 5 ), the Lega dei Ticinesi lost her only Senate seat after four years.

The turnout was reached with 42.5% in the parliamentary elections of 1995 its lowest level so far.

Selection mode

National

The National Councils are elected by proportional representation electoral system since 1919, ie the seats are distributed according to the share of the vote the party lists in the individual cantons and only within the list according to the people voices. The number of seats per canton are determined by the number of inhabitants.

Council of States

Each canton since 1848 selects two representatives to the Council of States ( half-cantons: an agent). The Senate elections are governed by cantonal law. Apart from the Canton of Jura contact all cantons in the Majorzwahlrecht. With the exception of the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden, Grisons, Canton of Obwalden, Nidwalden and train the stands representation was elected on October 24 in all cantons.
