Swiss federal election, 2003
The Swiss 2003 parliamentary elections were held on 19 October 2003. The 200 seats of the National Council as well as 41 of the 46 seats in the Senate were to be reassigned. This 47th legislative period lasted four years until October 2007.
In the National Council, the SVP was with 11 seat gains (including 6 in French-speaking Switzerland ) clear choice winner. The Greens were able to record 4 seat gains. The bourgeois parties CVP and FDP lost 7 per mandates. Thus, the poles were strengthened at the expense of the middle parties.
In the Senate, the SP won 3 seats and held nine seats, which they reached their 1979 record again. The FDP lost four seats and was the first time since 1991, no longer the strongest party in the small chamber.

Selection mode
National
The National Councils are elected by proportional representation electoral system since 1919, ie the seats are distributed according to the share of the vote the party lists in the individual cantons and only within the list according to the people voices. The number of seats per canton are determined by the number of inhabitants.

Council of States
Each canton since 1848 selects two representatives to the Council of States ( half-cantons: an agent). The Senate elections are governed by cantonal law. Apart from the Canton of Jura contact all cantons in the Majorzwahlrecht. With the exception of the cantons of Appenzell Innerrhoden, train and Grisons, the Estates ' representatives were elected on 19 October in all cantons.
