Swiss Insurance Association

The Swiss Insurance Association is the umbrella organization of the private insurance industry. The SIA are connected small and large, national and international insurers and reinsurers. Member companies support the basic principles of the association:

  • Free market entry and competition
  • Quality, reliability, transparency and fairness in the insurance business
  • Security through professional underwriting and risk management
  • Tracking the Swiss Code of Best Practice and to the disclosure rules of SIX Swiss Exchange
  • Progressive Employer Code

Objectives

The Swiss Insurance Association

  • Is committed to the preservation and promotion of a liberal and socially responsible market and competition;
  • Committed to economic acceptable conditions, particularly in the areas of prevention, insurance supervision, insurance sales and accounting;
  • Promotes an active, integrated public relations confidence in the insurance industry;
  • Donated by common know -how, through joint activities and information benefits for its members;
  • Provides a comprehensive, goal-oriented and modular education and training;
  • Is committed to implementing various measures for the prevention of damage.

Member companies

The Swiss Insurance Association has approximately 75 insurance companies, some of which are connected to each other in the consolidated group. On the member companies of the SIA accounts for over 90 % of generated on the Swiss market premium of private insurers.

Structure of the SIA

The SIA is the meaning of article 60. CC organized in the legal form of an association. The General Assembly elects the most important functional elements. The Executive Board defines the Association's objectives and the strategy and monitors the activities of the office. In six committees and commissions over 18 highly qualified employees of member companies develop solutions in the interest of the entire insurance industry. The office is divided into seven divisions and financial regulation, personal insurance, property insurance, communication, education, services and Secretariat.

Historical development

The first private insurance companies were founded in the 19th century. Many of them are still on the market, the furniture (founded 1826), Swiss Life ( 1857), Helvetia (1858 ), Basel (1863 ), Swiss Re (1863 ), the Zurich (1872 ) or the Winterthur (1875 ). The foundation of the " Association concessionierter Swiss insurance companies" took place in 1900, were involved in 21 insurance companies. For him, the SIA has emerged that around 75 members is today.

Authority

The member companies of the SIA are placed under the supervision of the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority FINMA. With the adoption on 22 June 2007 by the Federal Assembly Federal Act on the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority ( FINMA Act ) were on 1 January 2009, the Federal Office of Private Insurance (FOPI ), the Swiss Federal Banking Commission ( SFBC) and the Auditors for the Prevention of Money Laundering ( Kst AMLA) merged into FINMA. Not for the insurance industry in this sense include health insurance with the compulsory basic insurance, the Swiss Accident Insurance Fund Suva, the cantonal building insurance and autonomous pension funds. The FINMA granted the protection of policyholders and shall in particular the fact that the insurance companies are always in a position to meet its contractual obligations. The SIA is interested in a strong and competent regulatory authority.

Memberships of the SIA

The SIA is a member of national and international associations and organizations. As a representative of the insurance industry, the SIA is a particular economiesuisse, the Swiss Employers' Association and the Swiss Chamber of Commerce for the interests and concerns of its members. Particularly significant is the membership in the European insurance federation CEA (Comité Européen des Assurances ). The organization, founded in 1953 is the umbrella organization of national associations of insurance companies in more than 30 countries in Europe.
