Swiss Mathematical Society

The Swiss Mathematical Society (SMG / SMS, French: Société Suisse Mathématique ) is a foundation based in Zurich to promote the mathematical sciences in Switzerland. The company was founded in 1910 in Basel. The Swiss Mathematical Society is a member of the European Mathematical Society.

History

Before 1800, the University of Basel and the Académie de Genève were the two major academic institutions in the field of mathematics. With the establishment of the Federal Polytechnic Institute in 1855 mathematics in Switzerland underwent a revaluation. For example, spent Richard Dedekind, Ferdinand Georg Frobenius, Adolf Hurwitz and Hermann Minkowski time at the Polytechnic in Zurich. The right to award doctorates earned the institute in 1909, which was renamed in 1911 in ETH. In 1897 the first International Congress of Mathematicians was held in Zurich. The Congress was organized mainly by mathematicians of the ETH and University of Zurich. At that time lacked in Switzerland a cohesive organization in the field of mathematics. In the course of the Congress Ferdinand Rudio encouraged to publish the works of Euler. This challenge led indirectly to the founding of the Swiss Mathematical Society. Rudio, who was then director of the ETH Library, organized and coordinated the project. It came in 1907 establishing the Euler Commission and in 1911 appeared the first volume. By 2007, over 70 volumes have been published.

On September 4, 1910 was established as a section of the Swiss Natural Science SMG / SMS in Basel. From the 4th to the 7th of September this year, the company held its first meeting in the small auditorium near the Bernoullianums. Rudolf Fueter from Basel, Geneva and Henri Fehr from Marcel Grossmann from Zurich were the founding members and the first three presidents of the society. In the foreground should " care of pure mathematics and are promoting their progress in the national and international level ". In its first year, the company had more than 100 members; in 2008 recorded the SMG / SMS around 550 members.

Publications

On May 20, 1928, the Company established a separate publication medium, the Commentarii Mathematici Helvetici ( CMH). In 1929 the first volume was published. Fueter took over at the beginning of the editors of the journal, the most publicized only posts by mathematicians working in Switzerland in the early years. The annual volume of the Commentaries is now almost 1000 pages and enjoying by the high scientific level international reputation. Currently, the Lausanne mathematics professor Eva Bayer - Fluckiger is chief actor Read the CMH.

1946 was founded independent of the company, the magazine elements of mathematics, which also turned to a grammar school teacher than readership. This magazine went 1975 on the property of the company and has since been published on their behalf. Editor of the journal is currently Norbert Hungerbühler.

Congresses

After 1897, 1932 was 1994 for the third time the International Congress of Mathematicians in Zurich. On behalf of the International Mathematical Union, the SMG / SMS took over the organization of the event. 2007 was the SMG hosted the International Congress on Industrial and Applied Mathematics, held at ETH Zurich and the University of Zurich.
