History

As of 1989, the organizers of the IMS had to find more and more problems enough sponsors, funds and suitable halls - it threatened the loss of the international event for Switzerland.

In 1990, the two badminton specialists Charles A. Keller have ( head of the department competition of the Swiss Badminton Association ) and Christian Wackernagel (tournament organizer of Winex cups and sporting goods retailers of the company Winex ) in a blitz by the Association of the rights and obligations to the International Championships under his own responsibility taken.

By 2006, a six-figure prize money could be distributed in several years, which helped the tournament to a four -star status in the World Badminton Grand Prix. From 2006 to 2010 served as the main and title sponsor of the company Wilson.

2007 to 2010 was one of the tournament to the newly launched by the BWF Super Series, composed of the twelve most important badminton tournaments. Thus, this event was the second highest classification for world ranking points ( 5,500 ) and the prize money was increased from 120,000 to 200,000 U.S. dollars. Ranked higher were only tournaments such as the Thomas Cup, Uber Cup or the Sudirman Cup.

2011 Tournament of the BWF was removed from the Super Series and will from now on as Grand Prix gold instead. On 20 March 2011, the Swiss Open announced that by 2012, the Japanese company Yonex is the new main sponsor for first 5 years.
