Swona

Swona ( Old Norse Swefney ) porcine islet, is the southernmost, now uninhabited island of Orkney. It is located southwest of the town Burwick at the level the southern tip of South Ronaldsay. The dangerous tides jumps and the fog in the Pentland Firth have made the shores of the island in particular before using the radar to the ship graveyard. Therefore, automatic lighthouses still stand at both ends of the island.

For wild and feral pets, the island is a charming island. Meanwhile, grass in the summer include a floor of wildflowers. The fact that the island was already inhabited prehistoric, displays a passage tomb of the Orkney - Cromarty type, known as a Stalled Cairn. It had an unusually long, sea-side chamber, which is now heavily disturbed by erosion.

The island, in front of a ship in distress fell on the Robert Louis Stevenson mitreiste, was abandoned in 1974 by the last residents and is largely protected. It is not used by the current owner.

At the southern end of the island from east to west are oriented remains of a Cairns of Orkney - Cromarty type ( Stalled Cairn ). Most Cairn material was lost through coastal erosion, but seven upright plates are obtained; some with gable roof form. The highest are 1.4 m high. The remains indicate a 16.5 m long megalithic site.
