History

The railway construction in the 19th century

On 4 October 1870 the railway line from Roskilde, where it branches off from the railway line Copenhagen - Fredericia, put into operation after Masnedsund on Storstrømmen. In contrast to the present line this route led over Køge Næstved (→ railway Roskilde Næstved ). Two years later, on August 22, In 1872 the first railway line on the island of Falster of Orehoved on the other side of the Storstrømmen Nykøbing opened Falster. From Nykøbing consisted of 1873 a mail steamer connection to Rostock. The rail link between Masnedsund and Orehoved was established on January 15, 1884 by the establishment of a railway ferry.

From 1874 Nykøbing was from the railway line to Nakskov. In 1886, the route of Nykøbing was opened to Gedser where then also the terminus of the mail steamer line was laid. Since 1903, the railway ferry Warnemünde Online Magazine was put into operation, and international long-distance traffic came to Sydbanen.

On January 1, 1893, the railway line Roskilde Nykøbing was nationalized and the integrated Danske Statsbaner.

The first half of the 20th century

On 1 June 1924, the stretch - Ringsted Næstved was put into operation. This route branches off in Ringsted of the railway line Copenhagen - Fredericia. To ensure that the long-distance traffic went over to this section, while the old route between Roskilde and Næstved served the transport.

The opening of the Storstrømsbroen on September 26, 1937 after four years of construction, the old ferry was abandoned and the travel time can be shortened.

The construction of the Bird Route

Already in 1940 there were in Germany and Denmark plans to build a connection between the two countries with a ferry service between Rodby on the Danish island of Lolland and the German island of Fehmarn Puttgarden on. Compared with the previous ferry Gedser -Warnemünde could, at a significantly shorten the ferry route and also produce better connectivity in northern Germany, to the compound across the Great Belt a significantly shorter total distance. On January 3, 1941, therefore, a law was adopted by the Danish parliament. On April 8 of this year, there was an intergovernmental agreement between Denmark and Germany about the construction of this connection. However, the Second World War prevented major construction.

After the war and the division of Germany but this route was interesting again, because yes the connection Gedser -Warnemünde since 1949 belonged to the sphere of influence of the Deutsche Reichsbahn. Therefore, the establishment of a railway ferry Großenbrode Online Magazine in 1951 between Denmark and the Federal Republic of Germany decided as a temporary solution. Through the construction of new ferries soon many international long distance trains between Germany and Scandinavia were performed over this connection and the Sybanen. This included the Italy Scandinavia Express with coaches from Rome to Stockholm.

Since the ferry over Gedser but was quickly reached its capacity limit, it came on 13 June 1958 treaty between the Federal Republic of Germany and Denmark to build the crow flies. The significantly shorter ferry route as more ship classes per day were possible for the same number of ships. On 14 May 1963, the bird's flight line was opened, and with it the route Nykøbing - Rodby Færge. In Rodby Færge a ferry port was developed with two to Fährbetten. As a result, the route to one of the main links between northern Germany and southern Scandinavia was.

Restructuring from 1997

With the opening of Storebæltsbroen total freight transport from the bird's flight line was moved to the new connection. At the same time the ferry service between Puttgarden and Rodby has been restructured. There new double-ended ferries were procured, which were equipped only with a track for the transport of railway vehicles. Thus, the change of passenger transport was associated with the use of multiple units of the MF of the DSB.

In the years 2009 and 2010, the route has been improved with new tracks, since the speed limit is 160 km / h It is planned to expand in conjunction with the construction of the Fehmarn Belt bridge section between Orehoved and Rodby Færge up to the transfer of Storstrømmen twofold. In addition, the entire line will be electrified.
