Sydenham Elnathan Ancona

Sydenham Elnathan Ancona ( * November 20, 1824 in Lititz, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, † June 20, 1913 in Reading, Pennsylvania ) was an American politician. Between 1861 and 1867 he represented the State of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Already in 1826 came Sydenham Ancona with his parents in the Berks County, where the family settled near Sculls Hill. He attended both public and private schools. Then he taught himself for some time as a teacher. In 1856 he moved to Reading, where he worked for the railroad company Reading Company. In his new hometown, he was also a member of the Education Committee. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party.

In the congressional elections of 1860 Ancona became the eighth electoral district of Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Jacob Kerlin McKenty on March 4, 1861. After two re- election he was able to complete in Congress until March 3, 1867 three legislative periods. These were shaped by the events of the civil war and its consequences. Since 1865 the work of the Congress of the tensions between the Republicans and President Andrew Johnson was charged, which culminated in a narrowly failed impeachment.

1866 Sydenham Ancona was not nominated by his party for re-election. In the following years he worked in Reading in the fire insurance industry. Later, he was also active in the banking industry and the general insurance business. In June 1880 he took part in Cincinnati as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention. In 1912 he was honored in Congress last still surviving member of the July 4, 1861, which came together at the request of then-President Abraham Lincoln special session of Congress. He died on 20 June 1913 in Reading.
