Syed Babar Ali

Syed Babar Ali ( born 1926 in Lahore, Pakistan) is a Pakistani businessman, philanthropist and former Finance Minister of Pakistan.

Life

Syed Babar Ali visited from 1934 to 1943 the Aitchison College, Lahore. He studied in 1947 at the University of Michigan, returned to Pakistan and earned his bachelor's degree from the Punjab University. From 1955 to 1973 he was Director of the Pakistani firm Packages Limited, the manufacturing and trading of paper, carton, cardboard, packaging materials and hygiene products operates; and he is still in an advisory capacity. He established joint ventures with multinational corporations such as Tetra Pak (Sweden), Coca -Cola (USA), Nestlé ( Switzerland ) and Mitsubishi ( Japan). He was also active in the development of various other Pakistani companies as well as government mandate. In 1973 he studied at the Harvard Business School. In 1986 he was one of the founders of the Lahore University of Management Sciences ( LUMS ). He was Finance Minister of Pakistan in the transitional government of Ahmad Qureshi Menuddin from 23 July 1993 until 19 October 1993. Between 1996 and 1999 he was the president of the World Wide Fund for Nature International. He also serves as Honorary Consul General of Sweden in Lahore.

Syed Babar Ali is Shiite Muslim. He is the son of Syed Ali Maratib, who was a prominent business leaders from Lahore. On his mother's side he comes from the Fakir Khana family of Lahore. He is the brother of industrialist Syed Wajid Ali.
