Sylke Otto

Sylke Otto (born 7 July 1969, Karl- Marx-Stadt ) is a former German luger.

In 1983 she attended the Sports School in Upper Wiesenthal and was a member of the SC tractor Oberwiesenthal. Between the years 1989 and 1993 she received training as a pharmaceutical-technical assistant. Since 1996 she has time soldier with the rank of First Sergeant in the sports promotion group of the Bundeswehr.

In her career she won 37 World Cup races and was five times each European and World Champion. The overall World Cup, she won four times. Highlights of her career were the gold medals at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City and at the 2006 Olympics in Turin. In the same year she was third in the election of Germany's sportswoman of the year. By winning the gold medal in Turin Sylke Otto became the most successful luge athlete. 2003, 2006 and 2007, Otto was German champion.

Sylke Otto started for the WSC Erzgebirge Oberwiesenthal. After her second Olympic gold medal, she was appointed in June 2006 an honorary citizen of Upper Wiesenthal. Since 1994 she lives with her partner in Fuerth. On January 12, 2007, it was because of a pregnancy, the immediate end of their careers known.

In the local elections in Bavaria in 2008, she was elected as a non-party candidate on the list of SPD in the City Council of Fuerth.
