Sylt (municipality)

Sylt is a town on the North Sea island of the same name. It was created on 1 January 2009 from the merger of the town of Westerland, Sylt-Ost with the communities and Rantum. The municipality is located in the center of the island. It covers almost 60 % of the island and 70 % of its inhabitants.

History

The merger of the three municipalities was preceded by several years of discussion on unification of the town of Westerland with the six municipalities of the office landscape Sylt. The aim was to create a common local government for the whole island. However, the project failed because of the resistance of individual municipalities. A report prepared in the summer of 2007 bill on the merger has not been adopted.

In December 2007, a local citizens 'initiative launched in parallel a citizens' petition to the merger of the two municipalities of Westerland and Sylt -Ost. By referendum, the merger of the two communities on January 1, 2009, it was decided on 25 May 2008. In July 2008, declared the inhabitants Rantums during a residents meeting their willingness to fusion. Finally, the mayors of the three municipalities on 30 September 2008 signed the territory union contracts.

The municipality Sylt applied initially no city rights. Although possessed the rising in this county town of Westerland about this, for reasons of better marketing in the important for the island's tourism industry is one for the time being, however, waive the city rights.

The municipality Sylt also performs the administrative affairs for the office landscape Sylt, which it does not belong to itself. Administrative seat is the unanimous decision of the former town hall of Westerland, added branch offices and public offices. Currently, the political bodies of Wenningstedt -Braderup, Hoernum and List advise concrete accession scenarios. Only the municipality of Kampen has so far not been involved in the merger efforts.

With the exception of the districts of Westerland bear the name " resort ". The district Westerland is called " Nordseeheilbad ". Each district forms a town council, with Westerland and Munkmarsch form a common town council.

Policy

In the election for Sylt municipal council in May 2013, the CDU won 14, the Sylt Wählergemeinschaft (SWG ) seven, the SPD six, the South Schleswig Voter Federation ( SSW) and the Green Party three, the island - list future Sylt ( ILZS ) two and the Pirate Party one seat citizens chief is Dirk Ipsen (SWG ).

Management community

Sylt leads since 1 January 2009 under an administrative community management business of the office landscape Sylt.
