Sylvain Dupuis

Sylvain Dupuis ( born October 9, 1856 in Liege, † September 28, 1931 in Bruges ) was a Belgian composer, conductor, music teacher and concert organizer.

Life

Sylvain Dupuis, who came from a family of musicians, received his musical training in the oboe class of the Liège Conservatory. In 1881 he was awarded the Belgian Grand Prix de Rome for his cantata Le Chant de la Création. Then he went on study trips to various European countries. In Paris he met Vincent d' Indy, with whom he had a long-standing friendship. He also traveled to Bayreuth to attend the Wagner Festival there. He became professor of harmony in Liege in 1888 before.

Dupuis made ​​himself a name in Liege as a concert organizer, he ran in 1895, the Belgian premiere of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis. Mainly he led French works on, by composers such as Debussy and Berlioz, but also operas by Verdi and Wagner or the composer of the Russian school. In 1896, he managed to fetch Richard Strauss as conductor to Liege and 1899 Gustav Mahler, who conducted his second symphony there.

Work
