Sylvester C. Smith

Sylvester Clark Smith ( * August 26, 1858 at Mount Pleasant, Iowa; † January 26, 1913 in Los Angeles, California ) was an American politician. Between 1905 and 1913 he represented the state of California in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Sylvester Smith attended the public schools of his home and Howe 's Academy. He then taught at Winfield as a teacher. In 1879 he moved to California, where he worked in agriculture. In addition, he taught in 1883 also as a teacher. After a subsequent law degree in 1885 and its recent approval as a lawyer, he began to practice in Bakersfield in this profession. In addition, he edited the newspaper " Kern County Echo". At the same time he proposed as a member of the Republican Party launched a political career. Between 1894 and 1902 he was a member of the Senate of California; in 1902, he ran unsuccessfully for Congress yet.

In the congressional elections of 1904 Smith was then in the eighth constituency of California in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Milton J. Daniels on March 4, 1905. After three re- elections he could remain until his death on 26 January 1913 at the Congress. Then, his mandate fell to the victorious in the election Everis A. Hayes.
