Sylvestrines

The Sylvestrine (Latin: Congregation Silvestrina Ordinis Sancti St. Benedict, religious symbol CSilvOSB ) are a male religious order in the Roman Catholic Church and belong to the Benedictine Confederation. The community was in 1231 by St. Silvestro Guzzolini founded.

History

The priest Silvestro Guzzolini (1177-1267) from Osimo (Italy ) was, according to legend, so taken at the age of 50 years from the death of his friend, that he decided to retire to a cave to live as a hermit. Three years later, in 1231, he founded at Monte Fano in the town of Fabriano a monastery. His brothers lived according to the rules of St. Benedict of Nursia, in addition they had imposed more ascetic code of conduct. This resulted, after they had first adopted the name " Order of Monte Fano ," the Congregation of Sylvestrine by Pope Innocent IV confirmed in 1247 after the death of the founder.

Development

After the papal approbation built Silvester other monasteries in Umbria, Tuscany and Ancona. The Prior General and the priors of monasteries were elected for life; only Pope Paul III. limited the term of office in 1642, a period of three years. Pope Alexander VII in 1662 united the Sylvestrine with the Vallobrosanern and ordered that the General Superiore were asked in the four-year change of the Silvestrinern and Vallombrosanern should. In addition, joint statutes should be developed. However, the two religious communities did not grow together and could not even agree on common statutes. 1678 was the separation of the two monastic orders and the Order of the chapter Sylvestrine was in the same year its own statutes. The Prior General, the local priors and abbots of the monasteries had within the church a high position, so no monk Upper could be a monastery, if he had not previously been Titularabt. For Titularabt turn could only be the one appointed master of novices, Secretary General of the Order, lecturer in theology, philosophy, or the Arts and Humanities or librarian had been too Fabriano previously or had provided an important service in the Order. In its highest flowering of religious counted 65 monasteries.

The " blue Benedictine "

The Habit of Sylvestrine consists of a skirt with a wide scapular, which is followed by a hood. In the choir, and when leaving the monastery choir they wear a coat. All garments are made of a shiny Turkish- blue cloth. It follows for the Sylvestrine the name " Blue Benedictine ". In bad weather, and in large churches a white Serge ( clothes overhang of artificial silk or wool) is worn over the Order of clothing. The Abbot General transmits over the Habit a violet Mozetta.

Women's Orders of Silvestrinerinnen

The Founder had also founded a women Congregation, which was entrusted to the abbots directly. Your precepts, and her habit corresponded to that of the male order. In later years, a conflict between the monks and nuns came, the nuns broke up and went over to another Benedictine community.

Objectives and awareness

During the General Chapter, which was performed at the founding place, underlined Pope John Paul II in his speech on September 8, 2001, the ambitious goals of Sylvestrine. To this end, he said:

" 3 Love Sylvestrine, the high and demanding goal we must strive ceaselessly, above all holiness. We must not forget, especially in our time, in which can be perceived an ever greater longing for God. In Him, we must align our mind in our daily apostolate. From this awareness, your Congregation is supported, in which the Holy Spirit at all times relied generous monks who were distinguished by their example and their apostolic zeal. It is here only reminds us of living in modern times Missionary Bishops Giuseppe Bravi, Ilarione Sillani and Giuseppe Pagnani, Vicars Apostolic of Colombo; to Bede Beekmayer, first native from Ceylon chief shepherd, and Bernardo Regno, Bishop of Kandy. Twenty years after his death, his reputation among the disenfranchised of the tea plantations as well as in his native Fabriano is still alive. Special mention also are the two pioneers of 1910 saw the foundation in the United States of America: Giuseppe and Filippo Cipoletti Bartoccetti, patient and fearless missionaries among the miners in Kansas. And finally, I would like Abbot Ildebrando Gregori remember the servant of God, whose canonization process has been initiated. "
