Sylvie Bernier

Sylvie Bernier, CM, CQ ( born January 31, 1964 in Sainte -Foy, Quebec ) is a former Canadian Water Diving. In the 1984 Olympics she won the springboard diving.

Bernier started in 1973 with the water jumping from 1975 to 1982, she trained with Jean Plamondon, 1982-1984 Donald Dion. Sylvie Bernier won five Canadian champion in springboard diving. Her first big international hit was the silver medal behind the Australian Jenny Donnet at the Commonwealth Games in 1982 in Brisbane. 1983 Bernier won three bronze medals: In the Universiade, the Pan American Games and the World Cup. At the Pan American Games, the two U.S. women Kelly McCormick and Wendy Wyland lay before her.

1984 Bernier won in two pre-Olympic competitions in front of the U.S. women. At the Olympic Games in Los Angeles won the qualification, the Chinese Li Yihua before McCormick and Bernier. In the final Bernier took over in the third jump the lead and was able to defend this position to the end, they won with three points ahead of Kelly McCormick. Li Yihua took 4th place behind the second US-American Christina Seufert.

Sylvie Bernier was the second Canadian medalist in the water jump and the first and to date (2008 ) only Canadian Olympic gold medalist in the water jump. The Canadian Press she chose in 1984 to Canada's athlete of the year. In 1985, she was admitted to the Order of Canada in 1996 in the International Swimming Hall of Fame. Sylvie Bernier worked for many years for various Canadian television stations. At the 2006 Winter Olympics and the 2008 Summer Olympics, she served as Chef de Mission of the Canadian Olympic Team.
