Symbolic computation

In computer algebra systems (CAS ), the term symbolic mathematics means that operation and calculation of mathematical expressions are carried out with variables on computers. This is called " arithmetic with letters" colloquially.

CAS many and some programmable pocket calculator (for example, HP -48 ) are able to perform symbolic manipulation formula. Thus, transformations and calculations of terms and equations are meant such as factoring, multiplying out the polynomial and solving equations. In contrast to the numerical analysis is carried out in the symbolic mathematics exclusively with exact phrases. Advantage of the symbolic mathematics is the universal applicability of the result. One drawback is that many problems to compute a symbolic solution very difficult if not impossible is possible.
