Symphony No. 37 (Mozart)

At Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Symphony in G major Köchelverzeichnis 444 is a work in which Mozart to a symphony by Michael Haydn wrote an introduction.

History

After Mozart's death, the score of a symphony was found among his papers, the Ludwig von Kochel was the Köchelverzeichnis number 444 and which was referred to in the Old Mozart Edition as Symphony No. 37.

As Lothar Perger was able to prove in 1907, Mozart, however, had only the introduction ( Adagio maestoso ) composed themselves; in the remaining sets are the Symphony No. 25 in G major ( Perger directory 16 / MH 336) by Michael Haydn, who composed this work to the inauguration of the new abbot of Michaelbeuern in May 1783.

For his numerous Viennese concerts in the early 1780s took many Mozart symphonies and used not only newer and older own works, but occasionally also those of other composers. Probably Köchelverzeichnis (KV) is to see 444 in this context. Unclear, however, is still how Mozart came into the possession of the symphony and why he provided them with a slow introduction.

Neal Zaslaw said:

" I assume that Mozart acquired these three plants as illegal copies, because the first is the one that he provided them with a slow introduction (...), and he would have - whether due to lack of time or desire, even to compose something, - hardly have chosen a more beautiful piece by another composer for it. Not for nothing was Michael Haydn's music in high esteem by both Mozart. "

The first and last movement of Haydn's Symphony pass through without repeats. The second movement (Andante sostenuto ) is rondo -like designed with a distinctive bassoon solo ( this is Mozart but not taken over in his copy ), while the final movement (Allegro molto ) in 3/8-time quite a character of dance in the manner of a gigue has.

In most complete recordings of Mozart's symphonies K. 444 is not included. A recording in the recording of the Academy of Ancient Music, Jaap Schröder offers with the symphony as a mixed version of Mozart's introduction, the rest of the symphony but in Michael Haydn's original version, so not in Mozart's copy with some variations in the wind treatment.

The Duration of the symphony with Mozart's introduction is approximately 15 minutes.
