Synaxis

Synaxis (Greek Σύναξις; Church Slavonic: Собор, Sobor ) is in the Eastern Christianity ( the Eastern Orthodox Church and united with the Roman Catholic Church Eastern Churches ) a meeting to liturgical purposes, usually to the celebration of Vespers, Matins and the Divine Liturgy.

Holiday

In Constantinople itself Opel clergy and the faithful gathered often on holidays to a church that was dedicated to the saints of the respective feast day to a liturgical ceremony. These meetings were called synaxes. The synaxes were later equipped with specially written for the particular feast day liturgies. A Synaxis often takes place in honor of the saint of the day the next day a larger hard day. For example, worship of Epiphanes ( the revelation of the Holy Trinity Trinitas at the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan ) were held in the Hagia Sophia; the next day a Synaxis in honor of Saint John the forerunner was then held at the church dedicated to him. Over time, spread the synaxes and are now celebrated in every church.

Synaxis is also the common memory of my several saints, such as the Synaxis of the Seventy Disciples. Although each apostle has his individual saint's day, but is intended for the Synaxis of them all.

Most synaxes be kept to the timed feasts of the Orthodox calendar on the same day, others will always find on the Sunday after the specific date instead. Other synaxes be celebrated in the Easter cycle and therefore move in unison with Easter in the calendar back and forth.

As this is the supremacy of the Latin Patriarchate of Constantinople Opel after the Council of Florence did not recognize the cleric who rejected the Council and the Union Church settled there were called the Synaxis. Among them was the most famous and influential of the monk Gennadius, better known as George Schofield Larios, who later became Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Opel was.
