A data preamble or preamble is a signal that precedes in a computer network messages transmitted. Depending on the network protocol, the preamble serves different purposes: in some it is the timing of the communicants (see Ethernet), in others it announces the following message ( see Wise Media Access Control).

In contrast to the header of a data packet, the preamble is not part of the data itself, but serves the vote of the interlocutors in the network. The preamble consists in the news announcement of a constant signal in the synchronization of an agreed fixed sequence of bits.
