Synthase

Synthases hot in biochemistry since 1984 enzymes that catalyze the production of a certain substance; This substance is called in the name explicitly. Synthases do not own the EC number assignment. Prior to 1984, synthase was synonymous with ligase.

Examples are the citrate synthase ( a transferase ) and argininosuccinate synthase ( a ligase ).

The similar name synthetase is an obsolete term for enzymes that consume a nucleoside triphosphate at her reaction. These enzymes are now known as ligases.
