Syria Vilayet

The Vilayet of Syria ( Ottoman ولايت سوريه, IA Vilayet -i suriye ) or vilayet Damascus ( Turkish SaM Vilâyeti ) was from 1864 to 1920 an administrative province ( Turkish vilayet ) of the Ottoman Empire with Damascus ( SAM) as its capital.

At the beginning of the 20th century, it had an area of ​​62,180 km ². The first Ottoman census in 1885 (published 1908) estimated the population at about 1,000,000. In 1897 the vilayet had 701 812 inhabitants. In addition to Aramaic, Kurdish and, since the late 19th century, also Turkoman and Circassian minorities settled in Syria Vilayet predominantly Arab.

In 1918 the area was occupied by French troops in 1920 it was handed over by the League of Nations, together with the United Lebanon French trusteeship.
