Systematic element name

Chemical elements will not receive a permanent name if their discovery is confirmed. Because there was controversy about the confirmation in the past (see Elementnamensgebungskontroverse ) has issued a scheme for temporary element name IUPAC.

The IUPAC rules

These provisional names are derived systematically on the nuclear charge (atomic number ). Each digit is in a root word translated ( see table). The root words are strung together in the order of the digits. Here, when the syllables ' hen ' and ' nil ' follow each other, is simplified to nnn nn. At the end of the syllable " - ium " is added (or " order " if the last root word ends in i).

The root words are derived from Latin and Greek words and numbers were selected so that each starts with a different letter.

The provisional symbols consist of the first letter of the root words.

The elements up to and including 112, and 114 and 116 have a final name. Therefore Provisional names are valid for the elements 113, 115, 117 and higher. The already discovered elements 113, 115, 117 and 118 are currently awaiting their final name.

Examples

Naming hypothetical or not finally named elements:

Eka and Dwi

The names of undiscovered elements were previously the one or two places above it the elements or syllables Eka Dwi preceded the periodic table. So technetium was called eka- manganese and rhenium as Dwi - Manganese. The disadvantage of the eka- Dwi system is that elements that are in the first row of the g- block, so that can not be described, because no element "above" is ( atomic numbers 123-140 ).

Possible number of elements

It is unknown to what can exist elements atomic number. The upper speed limit of the electrons theoretically allows the existence of neutral atoms up to an atomic number of about 173 However, it is likely that this limit is lower, perhaps just behind the island of stability at about Z = 126 Therefore, it is not really useful names theoretically impossible for elements such as form Ennocthexium for an element 986.
