Systemsoftware

System software is the foundation for it based application software. It is the totality of all programs and files that control all processes in operating a computer. It establishes a connection to the hardware and control the use of these resources, in particular by application software. It manages both the internal and the external hardware components and communicates this with them.

For system software include operating systems and system software. In many definitions and programming tools are included in the term, although these are usually not needed in order to execute software.

System-related software are, for example, utilities, database management tools and middleware. For systems without an operating system (microcontroller, embedded systems ), the term low-level software, however, often used for the whole software.
