Szerencs

Szerencs [ sɛrɛnʧ ] ( German: Serentsch ) is a Hungarian town in Borsod -Abaúj -Zemplén, about 35 km east of Miskolc. It is known as the gateway to the Tokaj wine region.

History

The town was first mentioned in 1216. According to an anonymous source is Árpád, the Grand Duke of eight strains ( seven Magyar tribes and Turkic and Khazar tribe: also called fekete magyarok, " black Magyars ") with his army during the conquest of Pannonia by on the Isten -hegy in the North Szerencs bearings have held. A small bridge west of town on the railway line towards Sátoraljaújhely, near the village of Fecskés, is indicative of the futility and cruelty of the Second World War. This named bridge over the creek Mader ( Mádi - patak ) measures 1.5 m or less and should be blown up by the Wehrmacht in order to prevent the advance of the Soviet troops. Until the 1950s, stood in the church, a synagogue, which tore down the socialist power structure and was a public building for the local LPG built in its place; solely to the Jewish cemetery has been preserved. Szerencs and Mád were before the Holocaust important centers of Jewish Communities, 1996, a restoration of the synagogue and the cemetery was made, financed by a Jewish Fund of the United States, at least in Mád.

In the region, the ethnic group of the Sinti and Roma, a significant proportion of the population. In everyday life, they are vulnerable to racism, which is not improved by the EU accession of Hungary. Illiteracy remains high, out of the usually low level of education leads to high unemployment rates in this ethnic group.
