Szolnok

Szolnok ( [ solnok ]; Sollnock dt ) is a city in Hungary. It is the county seat of the county Jasz -Nagykun -Szolnok and itself has the rights of a county.

The city has about 75,000 inhabitants (as of 2011 ), of which declare themselves as Catholic, and 35 589 33,100 are non-denominational.

Geography

Szolnok is located in the center of the county at the mouth of Zagyva into the Tisza and covers 18.723 ha

History

To 1030, the castle of Komitatschefs is built and named after his name Zounok in Szolnok. The city's name is mentioned for the first time in 1075.

From 1552 to 1685 the city was under Turkish rule.

As a result, the city grew thanks to the carried out with rafts salt transport on the Tisza to a trading center for salt and wood processing.

In the 19th century, transport infrastructure has been systematically improved by the Theißregulation and the railway (Line Pest -Szolnok opened in 1843 ). In 1881 had Szolnok 18,247 Hungarian inhabitants, agriculture, commerce, fisheries and trade in fruit, timber etc. exaggerated.

From Szolnok came the ancestors of the composer Joseph Haydn, who emigrated to the Burgenland later. Since 1902 Szolnok houses a thriving artist colony.

Until the First World War, the city was a garrison of the Austria -Hungarian army. Here was 1914, the first battalion of the Hungarian Infantry Regiment Freiherr von Reicher No. 68

Economy

There is the University of Szolnok for trade and industry, and an institute for the training of airmen officers.
