Szopienice

Szopienice ( German: Schoppinitz ) is a district of Katowice in Poland. It lies on the river Rawa, about eight kilometers east of the city center.

Character

This area is strongly influenced by heavy industry. They are also fitted iron and heavy metal huts.

History

In 1360 the Duke of Ratibor, Mikołaj II confirmed the Ottokar of Pilicą the ownership of the neighboring villages Szopienice and Roździeń. 1430 Szopienice is destroyed during the Hussite Wars ( 1419-1436 ) and remained uninhabited until the 16th century.

1546 arises in Roździeń one of the first large iron forges in the area; from there came one of the first textbooks of blacksmithing, which published by the Silesian iron foundry and blacksmith Walenty Roździeński in Krakow in 1612 book: " Oficcina Ferraria abo Huta i Warstat z kuźniami szlachetnego Dziela żelaznego " ( " Oficcina Ferraria or cottage and forging workshop of fine iron - craft "). By 1570, the village also Szopienice is repopulated. At this time includes the two villages Szopienice and Roździeń related with the Archbishop of Cracow family Salaman from Mysłowice ( Myslowitz ). The spread of the Reformation will not last prevents this reason. In 1784, the population of Szopienice was 79 inhabitants.

1834 founded the owner of the mining company Giesche heirs the zinc smelter Wilhelmina.

By means of an S -Bahn line were connected in 1898 Szopienice and Mysłowice. 1912, the zinc smelter Uthemann is founded.

Szopienice is 1921, the headquarters of the civil and military administration of Wojciech Korfanty the 3rd Silesian Uprising. 1934 Szopienice and Roździeń were merged in 1951 carried the granting of town rights in 1960 resettlement as a district in the city of Katowice.
