First, the Telekom was only owned by 49 percent of PTC and had applied to another 48 percent of a call option, though initially not paid the full purchase price to the seller ELEKTRIM.

The reason for the lengthy legal battles lay in the fact that the Telekom and Vivendi were divided on which the company in question is 48 - percent share in fact, originally belonged. The notion of DTAG that the shares belong ELEKTRIM (insolvent ), contrasted with the view of Vivendi, the shares belonged to a joint venture between ELEKTRIM ( 49 percent ) and Vivendi ( 51 percent ). Even as the legal dispute DTAG had against the will of Vivendi took over operational management of Era GSM in early 2006 and the PTC fully consolidated in their own balance sheets of the company.

On 15 December 2010, the two companies announced that they have agreed out of court over the ownership of the PTC. According to the agreement with the participation of the Polish state and ELEKTRIM Telekom paid 1.4 billion euros to Elektrim and Vivendi for the remaining 51 percent stake in PTC and was the sole owner. USA

VoiceStream was one of the leading regional mobile operators in the United States. Unlike its U.S. rival, the company founded in 1994, worked with the usual in Europe GSM standard. 1999 VoiceStream achieved a turnover of 475 million U.S. dollars. The company employs the beginning of the year 2000 8200 employees, had about 2.3 million customers and had mobile licenses in 23 of the 25 largest U.S. states. Through mergers with the mobile phone companies Omnipoint, Aerial and VoiceStream Cook had become a national wireless carrier.

The acquisition of voice streams by DTAG for 39.4 billion euros, including the assumption of debt was finally in 2001. VoiceStream Powertel had taken for the equivalent of 4.8 billion Deutsche Mark at the same time. The shareholders of VoiceStream and Powertel had approved the agreements with Deutsche Telekom on 13 March 2001. As a final U.S. authority had the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States ( CFIUS ) approved the acquisition without additional requirements. Previously, there was in the U.S. concerns about the high national participation of the Federal Republic of Germany at the DTAG.

The transaction was completed in late May 2001. It was the first transatlantic mobile communications provider with over 375 million potential customers. The German Telekom paid for the acquisition of VoiceStream deficit in own shares (3.2 per VoiceStream share) in cash, which converted each VoiceStream customer rated 20,000 U.S. dollars. In terms of price per customers the takeover was the then most expensive in the telecommunications market - for the Airtouch clients spent about nine times as much as Vodafone in the adoption of these U.S. mobile society and about 4.6 times as much as France Telecom for each Orange - customers paid.

With the associated acquisition was preceded by a high debt DTAG, which at times was up to 67 billion euros. From the press, the acquisition was usually considered too expensive. Following the resignation of Ron Sommer on July 16, 2002, a sale or merger of T -Mobile USA was by DTAG considered, but not carried out because the business development could expect a positive business development in the following years and corresponding increase in enterprise value. 2004 ranked T-Mobile USA customers with a growth of about 4.2 million net new customers the top spot when comparing the absolute growth rates of the U.S. mobile operator.

The VoiceStream acquisition is now widely regarded as a success, the purchase price as being far too high. In the first quarter of 2007 phoned 26.02 million customers in the network of T-Mobile USA, where T -Mobile USA in the same period had a turnover of 3.468 billion euros.

On March 20, 2011, DTAG announced under compulsory publication that the entire U.S. business was sold to AT & T. The purchase price that AT & T paid is, 39 billion dollars ( 27.6 billion euros converted ). Of the purchase price, AT & T will pay $ 25 billion in cash, the rest will in AT & T shares paid, which DTAG take over eight percent of the U.S. companies and thus becomes the largest minority shareholder.

On 31 August 2011, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission has filed suit against the planned sale.

On 20 December 2011, the German Telekom announced that the sale of T -Mobile USA to AT & T is not performed because of the strong opposition of the U.S. Department of Justice.

On 3 October 2012, the German Telekom announced the merger of T- Mobile USA is the U.S. wireless carrier MetroPCS. The German Telekom will be involved in the joint venture with 74%, the shareholders of MetroPCS with 26%. The transaction is subject to approval by the relevant antitrust authorities, and should be completed in the first half of 2013.

Since December 2013 reports came in that a possible acquisition of T -Mobile USA by the third-largest U.S. mobile operator Sprint in 2014 could take place. Accordingly, Sprint is preparing a takeover bid of up to 20 billion U.S. dollars. Nevertheless, the judgment of the U.S. Department of Justice remains to be seen, which as early as 2011, the proposed acquisition of T -Mobile USA by AT & T prevented.
