Tabarca Island is located in the Mediterranean Sea near the Cape of Santa Pola, Alicante, from which it is about 5 km away. It is managed from Alicante, which is located about 20 km north of the island. It is the only inhabited island in the Comunidad Valenciana.

The island is 1800 meters long and reaches a width of about 380 meters. Near the main island, there are three smaller minor islands Cantera in the west, the east and Nau Galera in the south. Cantera in the west of the island ( la cantera =, the quarry ') was made possible by quarrying to an island, which is separated by a shallow sea piece.

In 2003 135 residents were counted on the island, but in 2009 only 73

From the Greeks, the island was probably called Planesia, then under the Romans Planaria. In 1768 mainly Genoese prisoners came here, who came from the Tunisian island of Tabarka and King Charles III. were saved. He ordered embank part of the island, where people should live. From this period dates the current name Tabarca.

The main occupation of the islanders is in tourism. The island is visited especially during the summer when day trips from Alicante or Santa Pola be taken.
